The School of Engineering incorporates the disciplines of construction studies, civil, mineral, mechanical/manufacturing, mechatronics, plastics/polymer, electronic, computer and software engineering. Courses range from higher certificate programmes to internationally regarded Master’s/PhD postgraduate research opportunities. Several engineering programmes at AIT are accredited by Engineers Ireland as meeting the education standard required of individuals seeking one of the registered professional titles of associate engineer and engineering technician. Further details are provided on each of the relevant course pages.
Engineering courses at AIT involve both theory-based leaning and practical application demonstrated through laboratory and project work. Courses offered within the School prepare students to use their technical knowledge and skills in an industrial environment. Students have full access to specialist laboratories, as well as the institute’s extensive computer facilities.
A new state-of-the-art Engineering and Informatics Building opened in
2010, which positions AIT as a best-in-class provider of engineering
programmes. The 11,000 square metre facility is a landmark on campus and has greatly
enhanced the teaching, learning and research environment for our students,
through world class delivery and cutting-edge technologies. Almost every
classroom is wired for both-way remote transmission. Furthermore, this creates
a platform for up-skilling and continuous professional development for those engineers
who are already in employment.
The effectiveness of the School of Engineering in designing and delivering quality academic programmes has been greatly facilitated by the partnerships which have been forged within the public and private sectors throughout the Midlands region and nationwide. The combination of academic expertise, and industrial and commercial awareness ensures that programmes continue to meet the ever-changing requirements of Irish industry. The School has strong links with industry and provides courses which are designed to meet the requirements of specific employers, including the accelerated technician, skills-shortage courses and part-time courses for those working in industry.
There is a substantial
track record of research activities within the School. Postgraduate research
opportunities are provided in a number of disciplines and suitably qualified
graduates may enrol at the institute for Master’s and PhD research programmes.
The work carried out by students is relevant to real-life situations, with
research findings normally published and presented at national and
international conferences.
Cooperation with engineering departments of European universities is maintained with the assistance of EU funding programmes. Students with a competence in a European language may spend part of their course studying and/or gaining industrial experience abroad.
Whether you’re interested in energy management, software design, construction or designing new machines, engineering at AIT has something for you. If you require additional information or have any queries regarding a course, please contact the School of Engineering. Should you wish to visit the School, you will be most welcome.
