Sean Connell

Lecturer in Web Development for Tourism & Hospitality Businesses and Computer Applications

Graduated from University of Dublin, Trinity College and DIT Cathal Brugha St. with a B.Sc. (Hons) in Management and a Higher Diploma in Hotel and Catering Management respectively. After a term working for Marks and Spencer PLC in the UK as a graduate commercial management trainee I returned to study in DIT Cathal Brugha St. in Computing for the Hospitality Industry and began lecturing hospitality computer applications on a part time basis. In 1993 I was appointed as a Business Computing instructor with NTDI (formally Rehab) and lectured part time in DIT and Ballsbridge CDVEC in Business Computing. Commenced lecturing in ARTC in 1995 as a Lecturer in Hospitality Computing in a full time capacity. Graduated in 1998 with an MA from University of Dublin, Trinity College. In 2000 was appointed as Senior Lecturer in Hotel and Catering in Athlone Institute of Technology, a position held until the present day. Completed the PG Certificate and Diploma in Third Level Learning and Teaching from DIT in 2008 and 2011 respectively.

I have maintained an interest in Tourism and Hospitality computing and have acted as an associate lecturer on the European Executive MBA programme designed and operated jointly by Reims Management School, France and Kempinski Hotel in Germany. Have attended numerous conferences throughout Europe focusing on Information technology and computing for the Tourism and Hospitality industry, most recently attending the IFITT Enter conference in Dublin in 2013. Regularly attended the IHCI / IHI conferences, Learning and Teaching Conferences including Moodle MOOT in 2012 and Ed Tech ILTA conference in 2008, 2010 and 2011 at which I presented research papers. I maintain a research interest in learning and teaching computing at third level and am an active member of the Moodle Users Group in AIT. In 2012 was part of a lecturing team nominated by AIT for the National Awards for Excellence in Teaching for our development of a cross modular capstone assessment for final year honours degree students.

I completed my PG Diploma in Third level Learning and Teaching in DIT in 2011 and continue to engage in as many AIT facilitated learning and teaching events as possible.

Have acted as external examiner in Galway Mayo IT from 2012 to 2014 inclusively and in Letterkenny IT from 2013 to present.

I am a member of the Moodle Users Group which develops and trains staff in all things Moodle in AIT. I attended Moodle Moot Dublin 2012.

I help prepare final year honours degree students for the IHI Management Game.

I have served on Academic Council subcommittees such as the Learning Environment Committee and the Information Technology Committee. Also served on the AIT Strategic Plan Learning and Teaching sub committee.
