Frances McGettigan

Lecturer in Tourism & Regional Development and Tourism & Leisure Management

A Lecturer in Tourism and its related topics across a number of Hospitality, Sport, Spa and Culinary Programmes. Actively engages with public, private and voluntary sector stakeholders in the tourism, hospitality and sports industry through fieldtrips, workshops, seminars, conferences and various research activities. The main interests for research include religious/ spiritual tourism, destination management and tourism policy. In pursuing my research interest in religious/spiritual tourism, opportunities arose to participate in a number of national and international forums on this topic. In 2010 successfully secured Strand 1 funding in Religious/Spiritual tourism for a masters by research which in turn led to publications. At a national level worked with the group from the Institutes of Technology Ireland who submitted a response to the Public Consultation on the Tourism Policy (2013). Participated and offer guidance in workshops on Destination Management with Failte Ireland and Westmeath County Council on “Destination Athlone”.

Graduated with a degree in Hotel Management in 1981 from Galway Mayo Institute of Technology. Gained management experience in the hospitality industry for a number of years before starting to lecture. In 2001 completed an MSC in Tourism and Hospitality Education awarded by the University of Surrey.
