‘‘Always strive to achieve your dreams, however big or small. With a lot of hard work and perseverance anything is possible.’’ - Cathy Brougham, Lecturer in Science

International women’s day is a celebration of the achievements of women from all over the world and through the ages. For me, it is time to reflect on the last year and to celebrate the amazingly strong and independent women in my life.

There have been many women who have inspired me. Teachers, in both school and University have inspired me to teach. Their enthusiasm and passion for teaching and their ability to enable you to understand complex theories has inspired and motivated me. Their advice is what I would pass on to young girls today. Always strive to achieve your dreams, however big or small. With a lot of hard work and perseverance anything is possible. They also taught me to be respectful to everyone that you meet as good manners cannot be surpassed. It is because of this advice that I was able to achieve my greatest goals to date. My greatest achievement has been completing a Ph.D and being successful in obtaining a lectureship in AIT. Teaching has been my goal for many years. It is when students have that light bulb moment that you truly realise how rewarding this job can be.

Michelle Obama has inspired me as she has so much passion and hope for the future of young girls and their education. She has inspired so many young women to become trail blazers and leaders and to not be afraid to fail. “So often, our own fear of failure is the thing that keeps us back”. Do not be afraid, strive to be your best and support one another. If women stand together we are stronger than standing alone.

Another role model is Amelia Earhart. She was the epitome of an independent woman. She displayed an aptitude for science and sport. She defied traditional gender roles from a young age, transcending stereotypes and social barriers. Amelia has let us in no doubt that the sky is the limit.
