AIT Student Resource Centre

The SRC team pride ourselves on being friendly and welcoming and strive to do our utmost to help students make the most out of their time in AIT. College life is exciting however it is not without challenges so we are often the first port of call when students are struggling to deal with problems which may arise. You have a wide range of supports and resources available to you; the choice is yours!

You’ll find us very approachable and happy to answer your questions, so don’t worry about not knowing exactly where to go, whoever you talk to in the SRC, we are happy to help! No issue too big or small!

Your Health and Wellbeing

Helping you manage your health and wellbeing is all part of the package when it comes to caring for our students. We consider your wellness to be an essential component to making the most of out your time with us. We have an extensive range of supports and services dedicated to helping you feel your best.

Student Health Centre

A fulltime nurse and limited doctor clinic is available to fulltime registered students.

Counselling Service

The AIT Counselling Service provides a safe, supportive and confidential environment in which students can discuss any emotional or psychological difficulties they may be experiencing. This service is available to all registered full time students. Counselling is provided by a team of professionally qualified counsellors/psychotherapists and a Psychologist/Senior Counsellor.

This service is offered free of charge and operates by appointment only.

Healthy Campus Initiative

You will hear a lot about fun activities and health promotion events throughout your time in AIT. We aim to build awareness and support you in making healthy choices and adapting healthy habits throughout your time at AIT and beyond.

AIT International Arena

We encourage all students to access our outstanding state of the art sports facilities. With attractive rates, fabulous facilities and an excellent schedule of classes; there is something for everyone.


Your Finances

Funding your next steps in 3rd level is a worry for many students. It makes sense to plan and figure out how you are going to go about it. A very helpful website,, provides information on several financial assistance schemes available in Ireland.

The Student Grant is the main source of financial assistance available. The eligibilty reckoner on can be used to check eligibility for the student grant.

Student Assistance Fund

The Student Assistance Fund provides a further source of funding for higher education students in addition to the Student Grant. The Student Assistance Fund (SAF) is administered through the Access Office in AIT.

How to Apply

Download the SAF Application Form and complete in full. Return the application form and appropriate receipts/documentation to the Access Administrator in room D07 on the D corridor.

SAF Application Form 2016-17

All correspondence in relation to your application will be sent to your student email address. It is your responsibility to check your email on a regular basis.

In general, due to demand for Student Assistance, participating colleges are not able to approve all applications they receive, funding is targeted to those students most in need of financial support.

Important Dates

The Student Application Form for the academic year 2016/2017 will be available on-line from Sept. 1. 2016

The Student Assistance Fund is funded by the Irish Government and part-funded by the European Social Fund Program for Employ-ability, Inclusion and Learning (PEIL) 2014 - 2020.


Your Welfare

AIT works hard to ensure that no student feels isolated or unsupported when they make the move to college, or at any time during their studies. Academically, pastorally and socially there is always an avenue for the resolution of any problem that students may encounter.


Learning and Teaching Unit

The AIT Learning and Teaching Unit was established on December 5th, 2006. The unit comes under the remit of the Registrar, Dr. Joseph Ryan. The unit is dedicated to the support and advancement of learning and teaching in Athlone Institute of Technology. The unit will work collaboratively to continue to develop a culture that:

  • Respects and supports individual differences among learners.
  • Encourages the development of student centered learning environments in which diverse students can learn and excel.
  • Values and rewards teaching. Supports staff in educational research.
  • Assist with the dissemination of best practice in higher education. Encourages the implementation of pedagogical initiatives/innovations. Promotes and supports the objectives and measures outlined in the Institute Strategic Plan, which relate to excellence and innovation in Learning and Teaching.

You might need some help along the way when it comes to learning at 3rd level. We have identified key area swhere students benefit from additional assistance and encourage you to make the most out of the supports available to you.


Your Career & Further Study

The Careers Office is all about helping you reach your full potential and preparing you for your next steps once you graduate! We do this through providing you with personal development pportunities, helping you navigate your way through academic progression options, careers bootcamps, employer presentations, our Annual Careers Fair and more.

We will shortly launch our new careers portal ‘Target Connect’ which will allow you to book appointments for help with CVs, cover letters, interview preparation, further study options and more. You will also be able to view job opportunities and engage with employers directly through our employer recruitment programme. Your Students’ Union

The SU is an organisation run by students for students; providing support and information on a wide range of issues relating to college life. The SU also provides information and advice on student accommodation in Athlone. Operating out of a newly refurbished student club with recreational amenities and a great atmosphere, the SU team look forward to meeting you. Click here for further information
