Certificate in Fundamentals of Mindfulness in Secondary Schools
Why take this course?
Mindfulness is the practice of paying attention to what is happening “right here, right now” on purpose and without judgement. Extensive scientific research has demonstrated that mindfulness practice has signifcant benefits for mental and physical health and the practice has successfully introduced into many workplaces, social care settings, health care settings and schools.
The introduction of mindfulness in secondary schools has rapidly grown in popularity in recent years. Mindfulness training has been shown to have many benefits for teachers such as decreased job stress, increased teaching effectiveness, and increased work satisfaction, improvements in classroom performance and increased well-being and positive mental health. For students, mindfulness practice has been shown to increase focus and concentration, promote positive mental health and physical health and enhance self-awareness.
The aim of the certificate is to give participants a strong understanding of mindfulness from both a theoretical and experiential perspective. We will explore the role of the school in the promotion of positive mental health for students and the positive impact mindfulness can bring to students, teachers and the school community as a whole. Participants will be instructed in how to teach mindfulness at post-primary level, and there will be a specific focus on linking mindfulness with the SPHE curriculum. Students will be encouraged to develop a committed personal mindfulness practice and will be supported in reflecting on and nurturing this practice as the programme progresses. Throughout the programme, participants will also explore
the practice and benefits of mindful self-compassion practices. We will investigate how the practice of developing a kind of a compassionate relationship with the self can positively impact both teacher and students.
