Why take this course?

This course is suitable for those interested in the professional side of the Construction Industry.

The Quantity Surveyor acts within both accountancy and legal frameworks. This 4 year programme offers specialisms in Building Information Management (BIM) and in the area of Mechanical and Electrical Services Cost Management. These are areas of significant growth in the Irish construction industry, particularly in sectors such as Data Centre Development, Pharmaceutical, Agri-food and large scale commercial projects.

In Ireland, as well as internationally, there is a shortage of Quantity Surveyors with Mechanical and Electrical qualifications. This means that the successful student will
be much sought after when it comes to employment.

Sean Harding, a Quantity Surveying (US880) student, found TUS Athlone was the perfect fit for his interests around construction from secondary school alongside his passion for sport with the facilities being world class on campus.

What will I experience?

The programme will cover core areas of Quanititying Surveying and explore Building Information Modelling and the cost management of Mechanical and Electrical Services Technology. The programme includes a nine month work experience placement.

In Mechanical and Electrical Services Technology the student will learn about Energy Management, Life Cycle Costing and Measurement, Estimating and Cost Control. The student will also cover Construction Technology, Construction Law and Contract Administration, as used both in Ireland and internationally.

What opportunities might it lead to?

It is envisaged that this course will used as a stepping stone to Chartered status, an internationally recognised qualification.

Employment opportunities include working in dedicated Mechanical and Electrical departments of various industries such as Data, Pharmaceutical, Agri-food and on large scale commercial projects. The graduate will be qualified to work with contractors, sub-contractors, local authorities, government departments or as a consultant in a private practice.

If travel is on your agenda then this course is ideally suited to fulfil that ambition as it covers different aspects of Irish and international mechanical and electrical services technology.

Additional Information

The process of obtaining professional accreditation for the programme will take a number of years to complete.

Professional Accreditation

The BSc (Hons) in Quantity Surveying has been accredited by the Society of Chartered Surveyors of Ireland (SCIS), an affiliate of the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS). All graduates will have the educational qualification deemed necessary to apply for the title of Chartered Quantity Surveyor.
