Bachelor of Science Software Design (Mobile Apps and Connected Devices)
CAO Course Code
Why take this course?
In 2003, there were approximately 6.3 billion people living on the planet and 500 million Internet connected devices. By 2020 there will be 50 billion connected devices. Known as the Internet of Things (IoT), everything that can benefit from a network connection will have one.
In the IoT environment your phone will control your world. Late home from work, your phone will turn on the heating, check the fridge and choose a recipe based on those ingredients. It may tell you what additional ingredients you need and where you can find them. When you arrive home, your phone will automatically unlock your door, turn on the lights and suggest a route for that run you were planning.
Today the app economy in Europe employs 1.8 million people. It is estimated that 94.4 billion apps were downloaded globally last year. By 2018 connected device control will be an integral part of mobile App development.
The aim of this exciting new degree is to provide a multidisciplinary undergraduate education by developing specific expertise and comprehensive training in the key areas relevant to the emerging Internet of Things; software development/engineering, mobile application development and connected device programming. The goal is to produce qualified and well-rounded graduates capable of working in a range of IT positions such as Internet of Things mobile app developers, programmers, system integrators and system validators.
What will I experience?
AIT is a leader in software design education. The institute has extensive connections with industry, established over many years. Furthermore, the Software Research Institute, located on campus, is a national recognised centre. Student tutors and mentors are on hand to provide extra support outside the lecture theatre. Programmes are delivered in the state-of-the-art Engineering and Informatics Building.

Careers & Opportunities
This programme provides excellent employment opportunities for graduates. Historically there has been a significant shortage of graduates in the ICT area. This shortage has been compounded by the increase in mobile app development since 2009. The shortage will only be exacerbated by the emergence of the Internet of Things in which there will be a three-fold increase to 50 billion devices connected to the internet by 2020.
Graduates are eligible to apply to join the Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) in Software Engineering (Level 8) at AIT or related programmes at other third-level institutions.
