Information, Communications Technology, otherwise known as ICT continues to be a transformative technology force in the world and the release of low-cost microcontrollers and an exponential use of sensors is now driving the Internet of Things. This will drive demand for engineers with the skill to design and integrate these sensor systems to appropriate software platforms.
AIT’s faculty of Engineering and Informatics is housed in one of the most modern and well-equipped facilities of its kind in Ireland. Lecturers have extensive industry experience which enriches their teaching skills and competencies. Having completed a range of modules in the ICT area, you are better able to select which area you would like to follow for later years.
What will I experience?
This programme provides a common entry year 1 to the following Level 7 programmes.
- BSc in Network Management
- BEng in Computer Engineering
- BEng in Electronic Communications
This gives the student time and experience to come to an informed choice on which specific programme they would like to continue in the second and third year.
What do I do in the common first year?
- Building and testing electronic circuits based on the Arduino microcontroller
- Configuring small networks based on Cisco CCENT
- How a computer works inside the box, based on CompTIA A+
- Introduction to Java programming
- Computer Applications (Microsoft Office User System)
- Communication skills (learning to learn, team work, collaboration, presentation skills)
Years 2 and 3 will focus on different areas depending on your programme selection.
What opportunities might it lead to?
Each of the three programmes will provide the graduate with a set of core skills in computer systems and programming which qualify him/her for many jobs in the ICT sector.
Networked devices are all around us, from the traditional wired LAN, to wireless, to fibre, to cloud computing and the Internet of Things. All these devices require secure and reliable networks in order to function. The management of Networks is a core function of many organisations.
The student will acquire skills in the configuration and fault finding of network devices including servers, switches, routers and wireless access points and controllers. You will understand the nature of security threats and appropriate protection systems. You will also be introduced to the legal issues associated with data integrity on computer systems and the design and testing of engineering support systems. Project skills will be developed through projects completed in years 2 and 3.
Computer engineers play a vital role in the research, design, development and installation of computer hardware and software. Areas where computer engineers are employed include the mobile phone industry, gaming, medical devices, cloud technology, smart transport and energy management.
This degree will provide you with the education and training necessary for a career in the computer, software and electronics industry. You will develop the necessary theoretical knowledge in areas that are crucial to computer engineering and you will develop skills in computer systems administration and problem-solving.
This option covers a range of topics in the mobile and wireless communications fields. How we generate and consume information has moved more and more to the wireless space. This drives demand for ever faster wireless networks. The Internet of Things will be a significant consumer of network capacity. The increased bandwidth requirement will require a cohort of skilled graduates to fill roles in this area. The design and deployment of 5G networks will provide significant opportunities.
Graduates of all three programmes are deemed to have reached the educational standard of Associate Engineer by Engineers Ireland. This qualification is recognised under the Sydney Accord, by more than 40 countries world-wide, including the EU, the US, Australia and Canada.
A range of assessment methods are used on this programme. A high % of the overall programme assessment is by way of continuous assessment and project work undertaken by the students, this more closely mimics the work environment. The type of continuous assessment used will vary by module, it can comprise lab reports, skills exams, multiple choice exams, coding design, business plan or project progress reports, project thesis, presentations.
Final exams which place at the end of the semester. Further details will be included in the course manual students receive at the start of the year.

- Minimum Entry Requirements:
Grade 06 at ordinary level in 5 subjects in the Leaving Certificate exam. Two of these subjects must be Mathematics and a language (English or Irish).
Any QQI level 5 qualification is acceptable. Applicants to this programme are required, however, to have one specified Mathematics module included in their award or alternatively have Leaving Certificate Mathematics.

As a graduate of one of the Level 7 programmes you are eligible to apply to join the BEng (Hons) in Software Engineering or BSc (Hons) in Network Management and Cloud Infrastructure or related programmes at other third-level institutions.
