What will I experience?
Studying on this higher certificate will provide you with knowledge of those disciplines which form the basis for a successful career in the business and equine sectors. You will be expected to understand the factors which make an equine or a general business organisation successful. You will develop the knowledge and learn the skills required for a career in the wider business sectors. The qualification also provides the necessary foundation for progression to an appropriate Bachelor degree (Level 7) or to an honours degree in Business (Level 8). Emphasis is placed on both the theoretical and practical elements of the curriculum throughout the course.
Year 1 is delivered in Gurteen College, Balingarry, Co. Tipperary, with lecturers from AIT and Gurteen delivering lectures on site. Year 2 is delivered in the main Athlone Institute of Technology campus in Athlone, with one day a week spent in Gurteen where a bus is provided by AIT.

As a holder of this qualification you are eligible to apply to join the Bachelor of Business in Equine Studies (Level 7) one-year, add-on programme, which is accredited by Athlone IT, but delivered in Gurteen.

- Minimum Entry Requirements:
Grade 06 at ordinary level in five subjects in the Leaving Certificate examination. Two of these subjects must be Mathematics and a language (English or Irish).
Any QQI level 5 qualification is acceptable.

Job opportunities may include employment in equine administration, yard and stud farm management, in the marketing of horses/equine-related products, in transportation, in riding centres, in competition yards, and in equine-based centres/facilities within the recreation, leisure and tourism sectors, as well as in areas of general business.
There is an Equine work placement component in Year 1 of the programme.
