A pharmacy technician plays a central role in the smooth operation of today’s pharmacy, by supporting and assisting the pharmacist in their various activities. Pharmacy technicians are employed in both the private sector in community and private hospital pharmacies and by the HSE in hospital pharmacies.
The main aim of this course is to provide you with the appropriate multi-disciplined skills and theory to enable you to play a key role in both community and hospital pharmacies. In addition to lectures, the course contains a strong practical element and you spend ten weeks of placement each year in a community or hospital pharmacy. This placement is organised by AIT and is deemed to be enormously beneficial to your employment prospects.
Minimum Entry Requirements
Leaving Certificate
Grade D3 at ordinary level in five subjects in the Leaving Certificate examination. Three of these subjects must be a laboratory-based science subject, Mathematics and a language (English or Irish).
FETAC
Any FETAC level 5 qualification is acceptable. Applicants to this programme are required, however, to have the module Mathematics (C20139), Mathematics for Engineering (C20174) or Mathematics for Computing (C20175) included in their award or alternatively have Leaving Certificate Mathematics. They must also have the module Biology (C20006) or alternatively have a Leaving Certificate Science subject.

Progression
After graduating from this programme you may apply to join the BSc in Clinical Pharmacy Practice at AIT. Alternatively, on attaining an average of 78% in this course, you may apply through UCAS to UK universities for their five-year Master’s degree in pharmacy to graduate as a pharmacist.Professional Recognition
