The course provides participants with specialist knowledge in primary science education. It offers an opportunity to reflect on their professional practice and gain a theoretical and critical perspective of science education. This course is informed by, and addresses, national and international developments in primary science education.

On successful completion of the programme, participants will be able to:

  • demonstrate an understanding of the scientific principles underlying the four strands of the primary science curriculum;
  • develop appropriate activities to demonstrate the scientific principles underpinning the four teaching strands;
  • apply knowledge and understanding of how children learn and think about science, in order to plan appropriate learning experiences;
  • critically evaluate the provision of science within a primary school;
  • develop a school plan for the provision of science education, across all primary school classes;
  • critically appraise best practice with respect to primary science education.

Minimum Entry Requirements

A recognised primary teaching qualification, plus two years’ post-qualification experience.

Scientific Thought Processes and Awareness, Pedagogy of Learning and Teaching Science, Teaching the Energy and Forces Strand, Teaching the Materials Strand, Teaching the Livings Things Strand, Teaching the Environment Awareness and Care Strand, Education Research Methods.

Year 2

Digital Technology and Science Education, Multiple Intelligence and Inclusive Practices, Issues in Modern Science, Action Research-Based Dissertation.
