School Leavers

Application for AIT programmes is made through the Central Applications Office (CAO). The CAO handbook provides full details of the application procedure. You should read the handbook carefully and follow the directions given. Neither AIT nor the CAO accepts responsibility for any mistakes made, or the consequences of such mistakes, if correct procedures are not followed.

For most applicants, the procedures outlined in the CAO handbook are sufficient to help ensure the completion of the application process. Further information is available online at www.cao.ie. It is also possible to apply for a place online.

Applicants for the Bachelor of Arts in Design (Communications) and the Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Design in Visual Communications are required to comply with the institute’s special criteria for entry. Applications for these programmes cannot be accepted after 1 February in the year of entry and an applicant cannot select these programmes as a new choice after 1 February in the year of entry.

Bonus Points for Honours Maths

Students applying to Athlone Institute of Technology (AIT) from 2012 will be awarded bonus points if they sit the higher level mathematics exam in the Leaving Certificate. Bonus points will be awarded irrespective of the year in which the examinations were taken.

AIT will award a standard 25 bonus points for all higher level maths grades D and above, irrespective of the grade achieved. There will be no bonus points awarded for grade E or below.

Applicants to the Central Applications Office (CAO) will, as previously, count the score from their six best subjects. If higher level maths is not among these six subjects, the bonus points will not be included in the total points score. This means that the maximum cumulative Leaving Certificate points total will increase from 600 to 625.
