4th Annual PAL Symposium hosted by Galway Mayo Institute of Technology takes place on May12th from 4pm-8pm and May 13th from 9am till 5pm in Galway.

  • Catherine Unite, Centre for Academic Development, University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) will be the Keynote Speaker at the event.
  • Keynote Abstract - Supplemental Instruction: "Learning to Change, Changing to Learn” 
  • Since the development of Supplemental Instruction (SI) at the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) in 1973, the model has emerged from its early beginnings in the American Mid-West to become an internationally recognised academic peer support program that continues to influence global scholarship and education.
  • The presenter will address the core components of the SI model, reflect on how the program has contributed to student success, explore international adaptations, with particular reference to the South African perspective, and consider future directions for peer support in 21st Century learning. 
  • Core concepts: Revisiting Fundamentals; Promoting Student Success; Exploring Adaptations; and Envisioning 21st Century Learning.
  • The symposium is aimed at academic staff in Higher Education institutions and Centres for Teaching & Learning concerned with student retention, integration and supporting the first year experience.
