Orientation and Access
- The Disability Support Service Coordinator in consultation with the Estates Manager will ensure that all access issues are addressed for students with mobility difficulties both sensory and physical.
- While all areas of the campus are currently accessible, the Estates Manager is continuously reviewing and upgrading facilities within the Institute.
- Particular attention is given to ensuring a safe environment for both staff and students with disabilities.
- The Health and Safety Officer is made aware if a disabled student requires particular assistance in the event of an emergency.
- Timetabling staff are made aware of any student with mobility difficulties on a particular course prior to commencement of the academic year in order to ensure that lecture rooms are suitable.
- Car-parking facilities are available to staff and students with mobility difficulties. This consists of a designated car parking area within close proximity to the college and parking slots adjacent to the different buildings throughout the campus. Permits authorising use of the parking area are available from the Disability Support Office for students unable to obtain an EU Blue Badge.
- Swipe cards are issued to staff and students to allow them to gain access to the parking area. Wheelchair ramps and grab rails are in place at all entrances to the main building and also to the Auburn Buildings, Medical Centre, Catering Building, Multi Purpose Hall and student bar.
- Blister paving is situated at drop kerbs in locations where access routes cross carriageways in the Institute. Electronic doors are installed for easy access to the main student entrance to the Institute.
- Accessible toilets are within close proximity to the library, student restaurant, bank/main administration area and college bar and sports hall. An overhead hoist and bidet is installed in the accessible toilet adjacent to the college bar and sports hall.
- Lifts are installed in the Institute to ensure that all areas are accessible.
- Adjustable height desks are situated in the Assistive Technology room and the library.
