Humanities
The humanities capture the skills, knowledge, ingenuity and creativity of people, while also recognising the connections, shared values and behaviours of the population. Such human and social capital is at the heart of the much discussed ‘smart economy’. Moreover, it highlights the enormous contribution which the humanities and the arts make to society and economic recovery.
This degree gives students the knowledge, skills and competences necessary for employment in a wide range of communication roles in community and other professional settings, and/or to prepare them for further academic study in related areas. Specifically the programme will explore the different interfaces of human interaction (i.e. the encounters between the individual and other people/community) by examining how we perceive, represent and express ourselves; how we establish relations with other people and develop communities; and how we engage with the world in real and virtual ways.
The BA envisages graduates finding employment in a wide range of sectors, including business, community, social, media and cultural organisations, education, tourism, NGOs, local government and local development agencies. The usefulness to all these sectors of the knowledge, skills and competences developed in the BA (Hons) in Society and Communications, is posited on a number of tenets: the centrality of effective language and communications skills to every area of human endeavour and community, and the conviction that the domain of creativity is essential to being human and theoretically within everyone’s reach.
