The aim of this module is:

  • to equip students with theoretical and empirical approaches to the psychosocial aspects of family support;
  • to critically evaluate the relevance of contemporary models of family support for the enhancement of service delivery and professional practice; and
  • to facilitate the student to develop approaches to family work that stimulate families' own capacities and strengths while empowering individuals and families.

On successful completion of this module you will be able to:

  • demonstrate an advanced understanding of the different perspectives of working with families across a variety of social care settings and the significant theories and frameworks underpinning these perspectives
  • critically evaluate policy, legislation and service delivery relating to families in Ireland and abroad;
  • examine the relevance of systemic approaches to working with families
  • articulate and apply advanced practice skills when working with children and families
  • evaluate various family support models (both national and international) and their relevance to family work; and
  • identify approaches to supporting and empowering individuals and families.

The module will feature a variety of teaching and learning techniques, including: lectures, tutorials, group work, presentations, guest speakers, case studies, role play, multimedia, Moodle, interactive class activities, question and answer sessions and self-directed learning.

Minimum Entry Requirements

Applicants should hold an honours degree (Level 8) in applied social studies or cognate discipline.

Learners who are awarded module-level awards are eligible to progress towards a Master of Arts or Postgraduate Diploma in Advanced Social Care Practice.
