Irish society has seen a growing reliance on childcare provision. A recent national household survey revealed that 40 per cent of families with pre-school children rely on childcare providers to enable them to work. It is also estimated that there are 38,000 child minders in Ireland. 

This programme is designed to provide graduates who can work in a variety of roles in the childcare sector. These roles may include childcare supervisor, office manager or childcare worker. 

As a holder of this qualification you will have acquired an understanding of the complexity of early childhood development and appreciate the contribution of psychology to the understanding of individual and group behaviour in all types of groups. Furthermore, you will learn how to organise creative and recreational activities for children of different ages and identify the role of law in the workplace. You will also display understanding of some leadership and management theory, and connect business and management functions to the successful running of any childcare setting.

You will also learn how to make an effective contribution in a variety of work settings, as a result of having developed the skills of empathy, observation, communication and objective appraisal. You will also be expected to promote positive attitudes towards a healthy lifestyle.

 

 

Minimum Entry Requirements

Leaving Certificate

Grade D3 at ordinary level in five subjects in the Leaving Certificate examination. Two of these subjects must be Mathematics and a language (English or Irish).

Note: A B2 in Alternative Leaving Certificate Mathematics or Foundation Level Mathematics will be accepted as meeting the minimum Mathematics requirements for entry to this course.

FETAC

Any FETAC level 5 qualification is acceptable. Applicants to this programme are required, however, to have one of the modules Social Studies (G20031) or Human Growth and Development (D20032) or Working in Childcare (D21053) or Caring for Children (0-6 Years) (D20159) or Care Provision and Practice (D20003) or Child Development (D20005) or Early Childhood Education (D20007) included in their award.

Garda Vetting Procedure

All students on this programme will undertake Garda vetting procedures prior to commencing their work placement. Failure to disclose previous convictions will result in students being dismissed from the programme. Previous convictions, depending on their nature, could result in student dismissal from the programme.

Year 1 – Semester 1

Principles and Practices of Childcare, , Learning To Learn, Supervisory Development & Customer Care.

Introduction to Politics, French, Spanish ab initio.

Year 1 – Semester 2

Development in Early Childhood, Health Promotions, Financial Accounting, Practice Placement.

plus one module from

Contemporary Irish Politics, French, Spanish ab initio.

Year 2 – Semester 1

Environment and Food Studies, Approaches to Childhood Learning, Information Technology, Personal Development & Communications,

plus one module from

Child Welfare Policy, French, Spanish ab initio

Year 2 – Semester 2

Interpersonal Behaviour, Child Care Law, Human Resource Management/Training, Practice Placement.

plus one module from

Children’s Rights – A Political Perspective, French, Spanish ab initio. 

Progression

As a graduate of this programme you will be eligible to apply to the proposed Bachelor of Arts in Child Studies Management (Level 7).

Career Opportunities

Graduates with a Higher Certificate in Childcare Supervisory Management can reasonably be expected to work as an assistant or supervisory capacity in crèches, Montessori schools, play groups, nurseries and other appropriate child minding facilities.
