If you want to become a professional social care worker, this degree is the recognised entry point. The programme aims to further develop and enhance the knowledge, skills and attitudes you will have acquired through successful completion of the Higher Certificate in Applied Social Studies in Social Care.
The programme is run for 10 weeks in a supervised practicum environment with the remainder in AIT attending seminars, classes and lectures. Theoretical and practical aspects are both emphasised. This ensures that when you complete this programme you are equipped to make an effective contribution in many areas of social care, including community-based work, youth work, residential care, project work and the care of people with special needs. Through obtaining the qualification, you will have acquired an understanding of the wider social policy context within which social care services are provided.
Minimum Entry Requirements
Higher Certificate in Applied Social Studies in Social Care or an equivalent Level 6 qualification.
Modules
Counselling Skills, Applied Social Studies, Sociology and Applied Practice, Interactional Approaches, Child Law & Liability for Social Care Professionals, Disability Studies: Promoting Inclusion, Group Dynamics, Field Practicum (10 weeks)
plus one module from
Management Theory and Practice, Mental Health, Business French, Business Spanish.
Progression
When you graduate from this programme you are eligible to apply to join the Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Applied Social Studies in Social Care (Level 8) programme at the institute, or related Level 8 programmes at other third-level institutions.

Garda Vetting Procedure
All students on this programme will undertake Garda vetting procedures prior to commencing their work placement. Failure to disclose previous convictions will result in students being dismissed from the programme. Previous convictions, depending on their nature, could result in student dismissal from the programme.
