The Bachelor of Engineering in Polymer Processing is a two-year add-on degree, which was developed specifically at the request of Ireland’s plastics industry. Graduates from the Level 7 programme will be eligible to advance from process technician level to technician engineering positions in their employment.
Learners on the programme will benefit from the combined expertise and capabilities of IT Sligo and AIT. IT Sligo is a leading provider of online programmes and has been extremely successful in delivering a range of specialist courses for those in full-time employment. AIT has considerable expertise and state-of-the-art laboratory facilities in the polymer technology area and many of the people currently employed in the plastics industry are graduates from Athlone.
The first semester of the degree will be delivered from IT Sligo, while the second semester will be delivered from AIT. Apart from a small number of practical laboratory sessions, the course will be delivered entirely online, with each student receiving extensive tutor support. A key objective of the programme is to advance participants’ skills in applying their knowledge to produce practical solutions to problems. They will also gain experience in the use of Six Sigma, a critical tool in the enhancement of industry efficiency. Learners will also benefit from working in individual, team and multidisciplinary settings; while gaining an understanding of the need for high ethical standards in the practice of manufacturing.
Minimum Entry Requirements
Applicants must hold a Level 6 qualification in Engineering, i.e. a National Certificate or Higher Certificate in an appropriate engineering discipline, or a National Craft Certificate or Advanced Craft Certificate in an appropriate discipline, with adequate industrial experience, or an equivalent qualification.

Progression
Graduates of this programme may progress to a Level 8 qualifications in meechanical engineering at AIT and at other institutions.

This course was developed at the instigation of First Polymer Training (FPT) which is Plastics Ireland’s training provider.
