Recent developments in the Irish electronics sector have led to the creation of a considerable number of jobs in personal computer installation and servicing, network installation and maintenance.

This course will qualify you to become a computer technician with enhanced knowledge of electronics, and computer hardware and software. On successful completion of this course you will have developed skills of assembly, testing, computer servicing, problem-solving and decision-making.

Minimum Entry Requirements

Leaving Certificate

Grade D3 at ordinary level in five subjects in the Leaving Certificate examination. Two of these subjects must be Mathematics and a language (English or Irish).

FETAC

Any FETAC level 5 qualification is acceptable. Applicants to this programme are required, however, to have the module Mathematics for Engineering (C20174) or Mathematics (C20139) or Mathematics for Computing (C20175) included in their award or alternatively have Leaving Certificate Mathematics.

Modules

Year 1

Digital Electronics, Analogue Electronics and Telecommunication, Software Development, Mathematics, Materials Processes and Practice, Communications and Computer Applications.

Year 2 – Semester 1

Electronics, Digital Systems, Mathematics, Software Development, Business Environment and Systems, Computer Project.

Year 2 – Semester 2

Communications Systems, Digital Systems, Mathematics, Software Development, Computer Project, Business Environment and Systems.


Progression

As a graduate of this course you are eligible to apply to join the Bachelor of Engineering in Computer Engineering (Level 7) programme at AIT or related Level 7 programmes at other third-level institutions.

 

 

Professional Recognition

As a graduate of the Higher Certificate in Engineering in Electronics and Computer Engineering, you are eligible to apply to Engineers Ireland to use the registered professional title of Engineering Technician.
