Despite the current challenges faced by the construction industry, research indicates that sustainable construction, particularly in the domestic built environment, is still vibrant and that there are skills shortages in that area. This is a broadly based course which emphasises the principles of construction and has a strong bias towards sustainable construction practices. It will equip you with practical skills and an in-depth knowledge of sustainable construction materials and building techniques, including the adaptation/refurbishment of existing dwellings to achieve a low carbon design, in order to create a more pleasant living and working environment. The course is delivered through lectures and practicals. You will be involved in practical work in the computing, construction science and AutoCAD laboratories, and also outdoor practicals in surveying.
After completing this degree, you will be able assess building sustainability from an environmental and community perspective, and make recommendations on reducing carbon emissions. You will have the ability to provide advice on linking optimum energy use with optimum sustainability in terms of building component design and performance vis-à-vis economic considerations. You will also have knowledge of the science of renewable energies and sustainable materials as applied to new and existing properties. You will be able to take on the role of project manager, coordinating a design team and providing advice on all construction issues. You will also be able to cost projects and be aware of the sources of finance available in the delivery of sustainable building projects.

Career Opportunities
Employment opportunities for graduates occur principally in the private sector e.g. sustainable building contractors and built environment professional consultancies. The general nature of the course helps to ensure a wide range of job opportunities, including employment with building contractors, architects, quantity surveyors and local authorities. Opportunities are many and varied and could involve the preparation of drawings and specifications, surveying and setting out on site or the technical sales area dealing with equipment or the supply of specialist materials.
