Graduate Exhibition

We are surrounded by visual communications: from billboards to books, road signs to sign systems, newspapers, magazines and packaging, all requiring the skills of the graphic designer. The work of the graphic designer invades and informs our visual environment every day.

AIT is the only provider of third-level applied arts courses in the Midlands, and the three degrees on offer are renowned for their typographic excellence in the context of design communications, visual communications and multimedia design. AIT is one of two third level colleges in the country which offers this suite of courses, and retains the ‘ladder system’ to enable students to achieve an honours degree through two routes of progression.

Central to the courses are a series of analytical, formal and technical experiences which allow the visual principles of form, colour, image and typography to be harmonised within conceptual thinking. As a student, you will be encouraged to develop diverse methodologies to facilitate your burgeoning problem-solving and visual development skills within the framework of each design project. In the first year of the courses, the promotion of creativity, the development of a more sophisticated visual language and the promotion of research methodologies will be fostered so that unique, individual solutions are developed and vigorously engaged with.

Design for print and design in the context of multimedia are the main routes of visual communication at AIT. The BA in Design (Communications) course is essentially design for print, while the digital media course allows a thorough exploration of an idea through video, animation, design for screen, and sound design. The four-year honours ab initio degree has typography and information design as its primary focus
