Should you be interested in learning about sound engineering, instrument technology, acoustics and music production, as well as about the business side of the industry and business in general, this two-year course may be of interest to you.

The modules are delivered through a combination of lectures, practical work, projects and continuous assessment. The course has a clear practical focus, with each of the three course themes (business, instrument technology and sound engineering) being covered by content appropriate to the music industry. On completion of the course, you will have assembled a portfolio of industry-related work. As a potential business and event technician, you will also have learned to assess the quality of music-based and related events.

 

Minimum Entry Requirements

Leaving Certificate

Grade D3 at ordinary level in five subjects in the Leaving Certificate examination. Two of these subjects must be Mathematics and a language (English or Irish).

FETAC

Any FETAC level 5 qualification is acceptable. There are no specific module requirements.

Year 1 – Semester 1

Computer Applications, ,Sound Engineering, Business law,  Learning to Learn, Financial Accounting.

Year 1 – Semester 2

Business Management, Music and Instrument Appreciation,  Sound Engineering, Instrument Technology.

Year 2 – Semester 1

Marketing, Sound Engineering, Enterprise Project, Operations Management, Work Placement.

Year 2– Semester 2

Project, Sound Engineering, Instrument Technology, Management Accounting.

 

 

Progression

Holders of the qualification are eligible to apply to join a Bachelor of Business (Level 7) programme at AIT. A module in Sound Engineering is included in this programme as an elective.

Career Opportunities

With the higher certificate you will be qualified to assume a junior position in the sound engineering or instrument technology or business sectors of the music and related industries. The following positions should be typical: sound technician (live and studio), event organiser, festival administrator, venue administrator, instrument maintenance technician, instrument repair technician, equipment maintenance technician. In addition to the above, the qualification provides a strong basis for a general business career and for progression to further studies.
