What is Freedom of Information?

The Freedom of Information (FOI) Act gives every person the following legal rights:

  • a legal right for each person to access information held by public bodies;
  • a legal right for each person to have official information relating to him/herself amended where it is incomplete, incorrect or misleading;
  • a legal right to obtain reasons for decisions affecting oneself

The Acts enable members of the public to obtain access to official information to the greatest extent possible consistent with the public interest and the right to privacy of individuals.

Athlone Institute of Technology has prepared two comprehensive reference manuals in compliance with Sections 15 and 16 of the Act.

Section 15 Manual, ‘Guide to the Functions and Records of the Institute’ facilitates access to official information held by this Institute, by outlining the structure and functions of the Institute, information on the classes of records we hold and information on how to make a request to the Institute under the Freedom of Information Act, 1997

Section 16 Manual, ‘An Information Guide to Rules, Guidelines and Procedures of the Institute’ facilitates access to the rules, guidelines and procedures that individual sections use in making decisions
