Pandemic H1N1 Information

Pandemic H1N1 (commonly referred to as swine flu) is a flu virus affecting the general population, which can spread quickly from person to person through tiny drops in coughs and sneezes. If you are close to a person with flu you can breathe them in and become infected. Droplets can also be passed from surfaces like door handles and hand rails.

Further information about H1N1 is available at the HSE website here: www.hse.ie.

AIT has established a committee to develop plans and formulate a response to the risk posed to students and staff at the institute by this pandemic. AIT’s response is informed by expert medical advice and by best public health practice. This committee is monitoring on a constant basis the incidence ofH1N1 in the college community and will respond in kind as the situation develops. This site and other public information channels will contain the most up-to-date information in terms of guidelines for students, parents and staff.

Please familiarise yourself with these guidelines and check regularly for updates.

Key Points

  • If you suspect you have this flu do not come to AIT for any reason.
  • Stay at home for 7 days after you first develop symptoms.
  • Don’t panic, for the vast majority of people this is a mild illness.
  • Call the HSE Flu Information Line free phone number 1800 94 11 00.
  • Ring your GP for further advice in particular if you are in a high risk group. Do not call to the surgery without ringing your GP first.
  • If you are a student living away from home, arrangements should be made for you to return home. If this is not possible identify a group of ‘flu buddies’ for yourself and your friends. If one of you should fall ill these ‘flu buddies’ should be able to take care of you. Information on caring for a sick person can be obtained by calling the 24 hour HSE Flu information Line free phone 1800 94 11 00
