A two-day cycle around Sligo and Donegal by staff at Athlone Institute of Technology (AIT) has raised €4,000 for charity. The funds will go to the North West Hospice, South Westmeath Hospice and the Midland Simon Community.

The first day of the cycle saw the peloton heading south along the coast from Bundoran in Donegal to the spectacular setting of Rosses Point in Sligo. After a gourmet roadside meal, prepared by the support team, the cyclists embarked on the return journey to O’Donnell’s county, tackling several challenging hills en-route.

On day two, the cyclists started in Donegal and headed to Killybegs in inclement conditions, where local fishermen provided a feast of fresh seafood for a barbeque.

Spokesperson for the cycle organising committee, Dr Andy Fogarty, said that the cycle had been a fantastic success. “The group is indebted to a number of individuals and organisations who were very generous in supporting the event. We would like to extend a genuine míle buíochas to Robert Duffy, AIT; Mill Park Hotel, the Great Northern Hotel; Ardcarne Office Services, Boyle; Ardcarne Garden Centre, Boyle and Roscommon; Paschal Doolan, Athlone Van Hire; Damian Harte and Debbie Harvey Smith; Padraig McGrath Butchers, Boyle; and the management and staff of AIT,” he said.

The cycle took place during the second national Bike Week, an initiative promoted by the Department of Transport as part of its “Smarter Travel” initiative.
