The new Engineering and Informatics Building at Athlone Institute of Technology (AIT) has won an award at the Irish Architecture Awards held in Dublin on Monday evening.

The 11,000 square metre facility, designed by McCullough Mulvin Architects, claimed the prize for best educational building at a ceremony in Farmleigh. The award was presented by Minister of State for Planning, Ciarán Cuffe.

Head of the School of Engineering, Austin Hanley, said that the award underlined the investment which AIT is making in engineering education provision. “This is a landmark building on campus and will greatly enhance the teaching, learning and research environment for our engineering students. We are investing €3.7 million on new equipment; spread across the domains of mechanical, renewable and sustainable engineering, gaming and network administration technologies, as well as civil engineering,” he said.

“Learners and researchers will benefit from a world-class educational experience in this new facility. We have developed 16 new engineering programmes in recent years and the building provides the appropriate infrastructure to deliver these courses and to support our plans for future offerings. It will also be used to both support the engineering requirements of the region and to act as a catalyst and a magnet for inward investment,’ Mr Hanley added.

Further information and the full list of award winners can be found online at www.irisharchitectureawards.ie and at www.ait.ie/engineering.

The Engineering and Informatics Building was developed with funding from the Department of Education and Science.
