Residents of St Hilda’s Services visited Athlone Institute of Technology (AIT) recently for an activities day organised by social care students.

The third year degree students designed, devised and created a recreational programme for people with special needs. The day consisted of warm-up activities, a procession led by a member of the army band, as well as a number of novelty events. The day concluded with AIT President, Professor Ciarán Ó Catháin, presenting certificates of participation to St Hilda’s residents.

Head of the Department of Humanities, Owen Ross, said that: “The activities day benefits participants and organisers alike. This is an annual event in the diary of our social care students and gives them a valuable opportunity to apply the knowledge and theory they gain in lectures to a real-world context. We are also delighted to support St Hilda’s Services and the excellent work that they do,” he added.

This is the twelfth year that AIT students have collaborated with St Hilda’s Services. Lecturer and principle organiser of the event over that period, Richard O’Hara, commended the students for their enthusiasm for the project. “Our activities day goes from strength to strength each year and that is a reflection of the investment which the students put into the event. Equally, it is a valuable experience in their formation as social care practitioners,” he said.

AIT is a leading provider of social care education at undergraduate and postgraduate level in Ireland. More than 650 learners are currently undertaking social care programmes on a full- and part-time basis at the institute.
