Going to College Information Evening for Mature Students to be held at AIT
An information evening for mature students who are considering going to college will be held at Athlone Institute of Technology on Tuesday 19 January.
The event will primarily focus on full-time undergraduate courses for which people must apply to the Central Applications Office before 1 February. Information will also be available on part-time courses commencing at the institute this spring. The information evening takes place in the Coffee Dock on the main campus from 6-8pm.
AIT experienced a large increase in applications from mature students to its full-time courses in 2009 and the institute expects this trend to continue in 2010. Institute president, Professor Ciarán Ó Catháin believes that the emphasis AIT places on meeting the needs of mature students, is an important element of the successful relationship. “We recognise that mature students have different requirements from other students, such as those coming directly from the Leaving Certificate, and we try to ensure that appropriate support structures are in place to enable them to achieve their goals,” he said.
“Mature students bring a wealth of life experience to third level education. They understand what employers are looking for, are adept at working in groups and are highly motivated. This creates a very positive dynamic in lectures and in practical sessions, and works to the benefit of the entire college community,” he continued.
Students will have the opportunity to discuss details of the 47 courses offered by AIT through the CAO, which are in the areas of business, humanities, engineering and science. Information will also be available on how to apply through the CAO and the assessment process operated by AIT. In addition to full-time undergraduate courses, prospective students will also be able to learn about part-time offerings, including the new Postgraduate Steps programme in social studies, which starts this spring.
