Job Opportunities and Fashion Advice on Offer at AIT’s Careers Fair
Employment opportunities with some of Ireland’s leading companies, plus fashion tips on how to land the ideal job, are part and parcel of the careers fair at Athlone Institute of Technology (AIT) this Thursday, 12 November. The event will be officially opened at 10am by one of Ireland’s most successful GAA managers, Tyrone’s Mickey Harte.
The idea for providing information on make-up and interview techniques, in conjunction with the more usual meet-and-greet sessions with employers, was the brainchild of AIT’s Careers Office. Final-year students and recent graduates need to perfect their approach to job interviews if they are to be successful in securing employment, according to Careers Officer, Denise Dolan.
“Most students and graduates have the skill-set and knowledge required by employers for graduate level positions,” said Ms Dolan; “what often differentiates one applicant or interviewee from another is how they communicate and present themselves. Subtle changes in approach can make an enormous difference in the impression made on an employer. We want to help our students present themselves in a manner that does justice to their own ability and competence,” she said.
The fashion show, organised in conjunction with Next Athlone, will feature ten student models, showcasing a variety of styles appropriate to an interview situation. The accompanying commentary will highlight why a particular style works and how it can enhance someone’s interview performance.
“Going for an interview is a very different situation to going out for a night. A prospective employer needs to sure that you’re the right person for the job. The clothes you wear send out one of the most visible signals about your personality and approach. The advice sessions we are offering at the careers fair are to assist students make the transition from college life to the workplace,” Ms Dolan added.
Presentations at the fair include “The Application Process” hosted by accountancy firm FGS, “Studying in the UK – How to Apply, Fees, Accommodation” and “Writing a Winning CV and How to Excel at Interviews”. The fashion show is scheduled for 10.45am and 11.45am. The fair is open from 10am to 2pm, with admission restricted to current AIT students and recent graduates.
