Rotary Club to Mentor AIT Students

A novel mentoring programme involving members of Athlone’s Rotary Club and students at Athlone Institute of Technology (AIT) will commence this September.

The initiative will involve Rotary Club members sharing their career experiences and knowledge with students in AIT as they prepare for their own careers. The sessions will include topics such as information about various professions, career planning and preparing for interviews.

Final year undergraduate and postgraduate students across the disciplines of Business, Engineering, Humanities and Science at AIT will benefit from the mentoring programme. Members of the Rotary Club will also spend time with international students at the institute to help them with their written and spoken English.

John Cusack, Head of the Business School, said that AIT’s students would benefit greatly from the life experience of the Rotary Club members. “We repeatedly hear employers stress the need for graduates to gain real-world experience. This is a very novel way for students to gain exposure to such experience and to incorporate this into their own career plans and knowledge tool-kit. We are all winners in this cross-faculty initiative and indebted to the generosity of the local Rotary Club members,” he stated.

Martin Egan, President of the Rotary Club of Athlone, said that they were “delighted to be involved with this mentoring programme at AIT. This reflects the best values of Rotary and allows our members to share their knowledge and expertise with the decision-makers of tomorrow.”
