On this course you will learn about the engineering and planning methods associated with the design, construction and maintenance of civil engineering structures and facilities. The course will enable you to gain the academic and scientific capability necessary to make a significant contribution to civil engineering construction operations and to create an awareness of environmental considerations in civil engineering.

Minimum Entry Requirements

Higher Certificate in Civil Engineering (Level 6) or a Merit Grade 2 in the Higher Certificate in Construction Studies (Level 6).

Modules

Civil Engineering Construction/Civil Works, Engineering Materials, Environmental Engineering, Construction Management and Costing, Mathematics and Structural Analysis, Project and CAD, Soil Mechanics.

Progression

As a graduate of this programme you are eligible to apply to join the Bachelor Of Engineering (Honours) in Civil Engineering, provided you have an overall Merit 2 (50-59%) or higher and achieve at least 70% in the Mathematics module or a pass in bridging Mathematics (offered to students by AIT). Alternatively, you may wish to apply for admission to Year 2 of a three-year degree programme or to Year 3 of a four-year honours degree (Level 8) course in civil engineering at other third-level institutions.

Professional Recognition

As a graduate of the Bachelor of Engineering in Construction/Civil Works, you are eligible to apply to Engineers Ireland to use the registered professional title of Associate Engineer.

Career Opportunities

Employment opportunities for graduates occur principally in the private sector e.g. with civil engineering contractors and consultants.
