Within this programme the student is provided with the opportunity to gain a comprehensive knowledge and understanding of the theory and practice of computing, information technology and related business functions, as required for employment and career development in small, medium and large organisations within industry, commerce and the public service.

You will gain a critical understanding of the strategies and methodologies used in providing computerised solutions to a range of business-related problems. High-level computer languages, modern business software packages, computer hardware and operating systems are covered within the curriculum. Information technology does not exist in isolation in companies and organisations. Consequently, the programme also allows you to develop knowledge and skills related to the main functional areas of business.

 

Minimum Entry Requirements

Leaving Certificate

Grade D3 at ordinary level in five subjects in the Leaving Certificate examination. Two of these subjects must be Mathematics and a language (English or Irish).

FETAC

Any FETAC level 5 qualification is acceptable. Applicants to this programme are required, however, to have the module Mathematics for Computing (C20175) included in their award or alternatively have Leaving Certificate Mathematics.

Computer Architecture & Web Development, Programming Concepts, Computer Applications, Financial Accounting, Learning to Learn.

Year 1 – Semester 2

Quantitative Techniques, Data Communication, Programming Fundamentals, Database Applications, Management Accounting.

Year 2 – Semester 1

Computer Networks, Object Oriented Programming, Operating Systems, Systems Analysis Techniques, Business Information Systems.

Year 2 – Semester 2

Computer Forensics, Data Structures, Systems Design, Games Development Concepts, Financial & Management Accounting.

Year 3 – Semester 1

Database Systems, Advanced Object Oriented Programming, Quantitative Techniques, Web Development, Systems Development, Business Management and Enterprise Development,

plus one module from

Computer Systems Administration, Logistics and the Supply Chain.

Year 3 – Semester 2

Database Systems, Network Programming, Systems Implementation, Business Management and Enterprise Development,

with an option of

Computer Systems Administration.

Progression

With this Level 7 degree, you are eligible to apply to join the one-year, add-on Bachelor of Business Computing (Level 8) honours programme at the institute.
