Athlone Institute of Technology (AIT) and Dongbei University of Finance and Economics (DUFE) have been partners for an academic programme of cooperation in Accounting since 2004. The first agreement of cooperation was signed during the Enterprise Ireland Trade Mission to China, led by President Mary McAleese in October 2003. Since academic year 2007-08, more than 100 students have studied on the Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Accounting at AIT. Graduates of the Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Accounting at AIT have the option of studying for the remaining examinations of the Professional Accounting bodies or studying on the Master of Accounting at AIT.

A delegation led by Vice President Sun Yuedong from USST visited AIT on 4 July to discuss academic exchange programmes at the Faculty of Business. Professor Ciarán Ó Catháin visited USST in January 2016 and during the meeting USST expressed interest in visiting AIT to discuss cooperation in the area of Sport Management. The delegation toured the AIT campus and met with Professor Ciarán Ó Catháin, President, Mr. Peter Melinn, Faculty of Business, Ms. Mary Simpson and Mr. Karl Turley from the International Office.
